Jane Yellowrock is the last of her kind—a skinwalker of Cherokee descent who can turn into any creature she desires and hunts vampires for a living. But now she’s been hired by Katherine Fontaneau, one of the oldest vampires in New Orleans and the madam of Katies’s Ladies, to hunt a powerful rogue vampire who’s killing other vamps.

Amidst a bordello full of real “ladies of the night,” and a hot Cajun biker with a panther tattoo who stirs her carnal desire, Jane must stay focused and complete her mission—or else the next skin she’ll need to save just may be her own...

Also in this series: Strange Brew, Cat Tales, Blood Cross, Mercy Blade, Raven Cursed, Death's Rival

The Jane Yellowrock series is one that has been recommended to me by many a book lover. I’ve had it on my TBR for years now and finally I’m starting this series and seeing what everyone is talking about.

Skinwalker is book one in the Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter. It was a delightful start to the series. We get action, adventure, mystery, and a diverse bunch of supernatural creatures.

I enjoyed Jane and the Beast. They both are kick-ass and distinctive. I found the alternating POV’s between Jane and the Beast to be remarkable and gripping. I like that Jane’s heritage is Cherokee, she reminded me a little of Mercy Thompson from the Mercy Thompson series. I also enjoyed that her past is murky and that we only get little tidbits on her background. It wasn’t a lot, but enough to wet the appetite. I also liked that she enjoys tea’s. I find that refusing; especially in this day and age where authors have their characters drinking coffee all the time.

Skinwalker focused on the characters and a mystery. I enjoyed the mystery. The pace was steady and the mystery was not apparent until it was revealed. Always good to be kept in the dark until the characters figure it out. Their was a lot of information on all the other paranormal’s in the world. With Jane very little, but we get a diverse bunch of supernatural’s and information explaining them.

We also have a little attraction going on, no romance, but you can see that Jane or should I say Beast wants Jane to find a mate. Jane understands and notices an attractive guy, who wouldn’t notice a hot guy, but she doesn’t just give in to attraction. The chase is half the fun.

Skinwalker was a good read and I look forward to the next.

About Faith Hunter

Faith Hunter is a New York Times and USAToday bestselling author. She writes dark urban fantasy, paranormal urban thrillers, paranormal police procedurals, and science fiction.

Her long-running, bestselling, Skinwalker series features Jane Yellowrock, a hunter of rogue-vampires. The Soulwood series features Nell Nicholson Ingram in paranormal crime solving novels. Her Rogue Mage novels, a dark, post-apocalyptic fantasy series, features Thorn St. Croix, a stone mage in an alternate reality. She has won numerous awards and Curse on The Land won an Audie Award for 2017. She also writes a Scifi novella series Junkyard Cats.

Under the pen name Gwen Hunter, she has written action adventure, mysteries, thrillers, women’s fiction, a medical thriller series, and even historical religious fiction. All of that Faith finds terribly boring. In real life, Faith once broke a stove by refusing to turn it on for so long that its parts froze and the unused stove had to be replaced. She collects orchids and animal skulls, rocks and fossils, loves to sit on the screened back porch in lightning storms, and is a workaholic with a passion for white-water kayaking, and RV travel. She prefers Class III whitewater rivers with no gorge to climb out of, and drinks a lot of tea. Some days she’s a lady. Some days she ain’t.

  1. I have the first three books waiting for me in Audible. I’ll get to them one of these days. I’ve heard such great things. And hey… I drink tea! Thanks for the review.

    1. ^_^ I like tea too. I had to request my library buy book 2. Then didn’t have it, but they had several in the series. It finally came in and I’ve got it now, but first I need to read some review books before I can dig into the library books. I’m a little behind on those review books =/ Ya, I’ve heard wonderful things about this series too. I’m hope it’s as good as people say. I did enjoy book one and am curious to see what comes next.

  2. I had several bloggers recommend this series, so I thought this year I’ll give it a try. Only read book one so far. Waiting on my library for book 2.

  3. I don’t know if I’d say Jane is gruff. I’ve only read this one book so far, so I can’t make a far judgement on her character. I liked book one Skinwalker but wasn’t overly inthralled as other series books I’ve tried. I’m going to read book 2, but at this time I’m not see what everyone else is seeing and raving about. It was enjoyable and a good read.

  4. This was a series I saw a lot about last year and wanted to try but just never dove in yet. I like strong female characters but not overly gruff ones. Wasn’t sure if this one fell into the too gruff category.
