Number-one New York Times best-selling author Charlaine Harris returns with the second of the Gunnie Rose series, in which Lizbeth is hired onto a new crew, transporting a crate into Dixie, the self-exiled Southeast territory of the former United States. What the crate contains is something so powerful that forces from across three territories want to possess it.
Lizbeth Rose is hired onto a new crew for a seemingly easy protection job, transporting a crate into Dixie, just about the last part of the former United States of America she wants to visit. But what seemed like a straightforward job turns into a massacre as the crate is stolen. Up against a wall in Dixie, where social norms have stepped back into the last century, Lizbeth has to go undercover with an old friend to retrieve the crate, as what’s inside can spark a rebellion, if she can get it back in time.
Author Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse mysteries and Midnight, Texas trilogy) is at her best here, building the world of this alternate history of the United States, where magic is an acknowledged but despised power.

June 18 – Road Trip
(suggestions: couple traveling together, character who recently moved/relocated)
For this one I picked the next installment in the Gunnie Rose series A Longer Fall. Eli and Lizbeth end up close enough to being a couple that have traveled to “Dixie” where the Antebellum South holds court.

A Long Fall is book two in the Gunnie Rose series by Charlaine Harris. It’s strongly tied to the first book so needs to be read in order.
It starts a little while after the events in An Easy Death [Dramatized Adaptation]. Gunnie Rose has been hired onto a new crew and their job takes them on a train ride into the country of Dixie where the Antebellum Southern culture holds sway.
It’s not long into the story that we are back into the action and suspense with a gunfight, a conspiracy that brings betrayal, and Eli popping back up in Lizbeth Rose’s life. I like the smoldering attraction and partnering of Lizbeth and the Russian wizard, Eli. They work well together and you can see their budding attraction getting deeper.
A Longer Fall expands on the world and we experience the south as it was before slavery was abolished.
All and all I really enjoyed A Longer Fall and look forward to listening to The Russian Cage in Graphic Audio.
Graphic Audio: I very much enjoyed the GA for book one and am continuing my listening of the Gunnie Rose series in GA. The full cast was top notch, the voices clear and crisp, the sound effects exciting. It all worked to immerse me deeply into the story. I had a really good time and recommend the GA.
Rated: 3.5 Stars

The cover looks a lot different to me than the first one. Sounds like it was about the same quality wise read as the first one. Glad you are still enjoying it.
The listen is consistent. I’m enjoying the series. Not my usual genre, so I’m not rating high, because it’s not something I’d listen to again, but still it’s very enjoyable. Thanks Lisa for visiting and checking out my review.
I thought it was interesting seeing a different region of this post America world and the different culture for her latest adventure with Eli.
I’m not a big Dystopia reader, so this genre has been interesting. It helps that I like our leads and how Harris is portraying the world and building on it. I had fun traveling with Gunnie Rose and how her and Eli work together. Looking forward to continuing the series in GA. Thanks for visiting Sophia.
I love the cover and the genre!
The cover is good. I’m not a big Dystopia reader, so the genre is interesting. It helps that I like our leads and how the author writes the world. It’s been a fun listening into this series. Thanks Jeanna for visiting.
I enjoyed these more than you, especially the Graphic Audio.
My issue is I’m not big on Dystopia or Apocalyptic genres, so I have a bit of trouble. I’m really enjoying the Graphic Audios as a listen and I find the mystery to be good. I do like our leads, but these stories aren’t something I’d revisit so they have fallen around the 3.5 mark. I’m continue on with my listen in GA.
Thanks Anne for visiting. Always a pleasure!
