Murder, magic, and a talking bird with an attitude—justice has never been this complicated!

When a body is found pulverised beyond recognition, I’m called to investigate. As Chester’s only magical Detective Inspector, it’s my job to handle the cases the Common police can’t. This one has all the hallmarks of the Other Realm—especially when I find a talking bird caged at the scene.

The avian is a cheeky, foul-mouthed creature with a knack for insults and an alarming amount of information about the murder. His claims are as dubious as his vocabulary, but he might just be the key to solving the case.

Things get even messier when Krieg, the King of Ogres, strides into the investigation. He’s imposing, infuriating, and entirely too distracting for my peace of mind. With magical factions on edge, a murderer on the loose, and a bird who won’t stop talking, I’ll need all my wits—and my rare magical gifts—to stay ahead of the chaos.

Justice might be my job, but staying alive—and keeping my heart intact—is personal.

Immerse yourself in The Other Detective Series—perfect for fans of fast-paced, witty paranormal police procedurals, complete with a fierce heroine, gripping murder mysteries, and a slow-burn fated-mates romance.

Written in British English.

Frustrated Justice is a prequel to The Other Detective series by Heather G. Harris and narrated by Alyse Gibbs.

A blend of homicide, sorcery, and one very opinionated bird.

I’ve been loving The Other Detective series and was thrilled to finally learn how the protagonist met her avian companion. This novella is a fun, quick read that provides that backstory while seamlessly introducing a new set of characters to the Other Realms world.

You can jump into this as a prequel or wait until you’ve started the series. I actually listened to it after Mystic Justice —mostly because my library didn’t have it available yet—but I think I preferred it that way. Even though it’s technically a prequel, having that prior context made the experience even better.

Audio: Alyse Gibbs is a phenomenal narrator who truly shines in this prequel. Her character voices are spot-on—distinct, clear, and full of personality. She does an incredible job of bringing both the murder mystery and the world itself to life.

Perfect for readers who enjoy witty paranormal procedurals, this series combines a strong female lead with intricate murder mysteries and a compelling slow-burn romance. The Other Detective has quickly become one of my personal favorites.

Rated: 4 Stars

About Heather G. Harris

Heather is an urban fantasy writer and mum. She was born and raised near Windsor, which gave her the misguided impression that she was close to royalty in some way. She is not, though she once got a letter from the Queen’s lady-in-waiting.

Heather went to university in Liverpool, where she took up skydiving and met her future husband. When she’s not running around after her children, she’s plotting her next book and daydreaming about vampires, dragons and kick-ass heroines.

Heather loves to travel and once spent a month in Thailand. Thai food remains a firm family favourite. It goes without saying that Heather is a book lover. She grew up reading the likes of Brian Jacques and Anne McCaffrey.

  1. This audiobook review gives a clear and engaging overview of *Frustrated Justice*. I like how it highlights both the storyline and the narrator’s performance, which really helps set expectations. It’s a helpful read for anyone considering the prequel, and it makes me more curious to explore the series.

    1. I agree, Lisa! Most prequels do seem to come out after a series is already well underway. I usually end up reading them later for that extra context, too. The Other Detective series is absolutely fabulous—I’m having such a blast exploring the world and getting to know these characters!

    1. It really is a fantastic series! I’m having such a blast with the way it balances the suspense and mystery with those paranormal elements. I think you’ll really enjoy it if you decide to dive in!

  2. This does sound like a good series. And, I’ve had a few series where it didn’t matter where I fitted in the prequel and was actually better after I got to know the characters like reading the prequels later for the Guild Codex Readalong series.

    1. Spot on about prequels! I’ve found that having that prior context often makes them even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for something new, I definitely recommend this series—it’s been quite good!

  3. Happy to see you enjoyed this so much, I’m always used to be a bit put off by prequels – I think mainly because I already have that ‘knowing what comes next’ feel. But, just recently I’ve picked up a couple that have changed my mind.
    Lynn 😀

    1. Hi Lynn! I totally get that. Sometimes prequels are best read first, other times they don’t do anything, but at other times they’re even better once you’ve already started the series. I really enjoyed finally learning the backstory of how our lead met her feathered sidekick!

  4. “Even though it’s technically a prequel, having that prior context made the experience even better.” I feel this about pretty much every prequel that is written AFTER the series starts. There is always context readers have picked up and *need* to better enjoy the prequel. Glad this series is still going strong for you!

    1. You’re so right, Jen! I feel the exact same way about prequels written after a series is already underway. There’s just so much extra context you appreciate having. This series has been such an enjoyable ride and is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. Thanks for stopping by!
