Regina Talbot-Jones has always known her rambling family home was haunted. She's also aware her brother has invited one of his friends to attend an ill-conceived séance. She didn't count on that friend being so handsome...and she certainly didn't expect him to be a dragon.
Younger son of a family of shapeshifting dragons, Highlander Colin MacAlasdair has lived a life free of both family duty and mortal cares. Moving in and out of human society as he wishes, he takes very little seriously - until Regina drops onto his balcony one midnight, catching his attention and his interest. She's like no mortal he's ever met, and no matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to get her out of his head.
Bound by circumstance, drawn by the fire awakening inside of them, Colin and Regina must work together to defeat a vengeful spirit and discover whether their growing love is powerful enough to defy convention.

For February’s prompt, we’re diving into the ‘Vintage’ category (think old-school favorites or genre classics). To me, vintage immediately brings historical settings to mind, so I decided to go with a Historical Romance. I actually read the first book in this series, Legend of a Highland Dragon, all the way back in 2015! It’s 2026 now, and this prompt was the perfect excuse to finally pick up book two. Even though it’s part of a series, this one works perfectly as a standalone.

The Highland Dragon’s Lady is book two in the Highland Dragons series by Isabel Cooper and narrated by Derek Perkins. It can be read as a stand-alone.
This novel offers a wonderful blend of historical and paranormal elements, all wrapped up in a compelling ghostly mystery. Plus, I’m always a sucker for any story featuring a dragon!
Regina Talbot-Jones isn’t your typical Victorian lady. Living solo in London at twenty-seven, she’s embraced her status as a social outcast—a consequence of both her ‘ruination’ and the secret gift that keeps her on the outside looking in.
Colin MacAlasdair is a fascinating hero—a dragon shifter and the younger son of a noble Highland family. Free from the weight of being the heir, he’s spent his years traveling and dabbling in magic, giving him a worldly, slightly disreputable charm.
The mystery feels like a Gothic house party with a twist. While the guests appear to be enjoying a typical weekend in the country, every one of them was actually invited because of the haunting—and there is a much darker secret beneath the surface.
Regina and Colin are a perfect match. I found both characters incredibly interesting, and their romance is a lovely, sweet slow burn. While most of the action and intimacy is back-loaded into the final 25% of the novel, the buildup is worth it. Regina is unlike any mortal Colin has ever encountered; despite his best efforts, he just can’t get her out of his head.
Audio: Derek Perkins has such a compelling voice. He perfectly captured the distinct personality and tone of each character, keeping the story moving at a steady pace. While the plot felt a bit slow at times, Perkins’ delivery kept me fully engaged; I honestly don’t think I would have made it through the physical book without his narration!
Set in a wonderfully eerie country estate, The Highland Dragon’s Lady delivers a compelling mystery perfectly balanced with a sweet, slow-burn romance.
