A Closer Look at Eva & Alex from A Duchess with a Secret
One of the things I enjoyed most while writing A Duchess with a Secret was getting to know Eva and Alex. They’re both layered, flawed, and compelling in their own ways. And together, they create the kind of spark that makes enemies-to-lovers so irresistible.
Eva is grace under pressure. On the surface, she’s the elegant dowager duchess — poised, well-mannered, and always composed. But beneath that polished exterior is a woman who has survived a great deal. She’s fiercely protective of her daughter and carries a quiet strength that comes from having endured more than most people realize. What I love about Eva is how she’s finally learning to stop simply enduring and start choosing for herself. Watching her slowly reclaim her voice and her power was deeply satisfying to write.
Alex, on the other hand, is all sharp intellect and controlled emotions. A brilliant mathematician who prefers logic and order, he’s not the type to wear his heart on his sleeve. He’s gruff, direct, and often appears cold to those who don’t know him. But underneath that reserved exterior is a man with his own wounds and a strong sense of honor. What I enjoyed most about writing Alex was peeling back those layers and discovering just how deeply he feels… even when he tries very hard not to.
Together, Eva and Alex are pure fire. They begin with distrust and assumptions, each convinced the other is exactly the kind of person they should avoid.
Their forced proximity at Fort Vauclairt only makes things more complicated (and more fun). What starts as friction slowly turns into reluctant respect… and then into something much deeper.
They’re not perfect. They make mistakes. They hurt each other sometimes. But that’s exactly why their journey feels so real and so satisfying.
If you enjoy strong, complex heroines and heroes who are a little gruff but secretly soft-hearted (with plenty of chemistry along the way), I think you’ll fall for Eva and Alex just as hard as I did.

Eva
“He’s here,” Millie whispers.
I don’t look. I don’t need to.
The man she’s warning me about radiates a chill so palpable I can sense which door he entered through. The air in Fort Vauclairt’s reception hall, warmed by hundreds of flickering candles and the breath of mourners grows colder by the second.
Of course, Alex would show up! Nothing like a funeral to size up how much of the estate he can have, just because he happens to share the same father as Geoffroy.
I’m being unfair, I know.
After all, Alex is the old duke’s second son. In neighboring France, the math prodigy would’ve inherited half of the duchy when Rodolphe passed.
Then again, there are no dukes or duchies in the Republic of France, nor are we subject to its laws. We’re old school in Mount Evor. Here, the principles of primogeniture and representation still reign supreme. The firstborn takes it all. The child comes before the sibling. With both Geoffroy and Julian gone, Millie’s birthright ensures that she inherits everything.
The only way Alex Castellane gets a chunk of the estate is if Geoffroy named him in his will. Which I know he didn’t. My late husband and his younger half brother had been estranged long before I met and married Geoffroy Castellane, a dashing widower twice my age.
Alex will get nothing or next to nothing. And Millie will be the next Duchess of Rohinn.
He knows this, of course he does. Yet he carries his tall, infuriatingly well-proportioned form with confidence, which lends an air of legitimacy to his potential claims.
