~ 3.5 Shield of Winter Stars ~
Shield of Winter is book thirteen in the Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh. Ms. Singh has built a race as cold as ice, who are merciless killers, but in this book she explores the hidden passion of an Arrow.
It’s always nice to return to the Psy-Changeling world. One of the things I like the most about Ms. Singh is her writing, she does a extraordinary job of describing things so fluently and with so much detail, but the detail can get over the top at times.
Shield of Winter was an enjoyable read, but not an Oh My God one! I have never been a fan of the Psy, though I did enjoy learning more about them, the infection in the Net, and seeing what happens when two Psy can find love. I found it new and refreshing to have two leads be virgin’s. This is something we don’t see in romance books, well this is the first one I have read that has had this aspect. I was also not expecting to like Vasic as much as I did. He came across so sweet and tender, for an Arrow, my heart melted, but he still has that detached personality that the Psy are known for. Ivy, also comes across strong and tender. Her personality complements Vasic. The romance was a slow fiery build of passion making it seam like young love.
As for the plot/storyline there was a lot of conflicts; with the infection, Vasic suicidal tendencies, Vasic bio-fusion gauntlet, Ming, the remnants of Pure Psy, the vulnerable E’s and the connection to their Arrows and more. Maybe a little to many plot’s and sub-plot’s going on for my liking. I also felt that the empaths (E’s) deserved to shine more and stick it to the Psy that tried to erase them. I wanted a little more on this story then the outbreaks of violence and death. I also felt that Ming’s appearance and talking about him was not necessary. We get some small appearance by Ming and a half as planed on his part is made to capture Vasic. Everyone wants Ming dead, but they talk and end up putting it on hold because of the infection. I was really hoping for a finish with Ming, but nothing happened and then this plan to capture Vasic.
Shield of Winter has its flaws, but there is a constant flow of familiar Psy and Changeling faces that welcome the readers back to the world. If you have not read the Psy-Changeling novels yet, I hope you give them a try.
