Mahōtsukai no yome (Jap: 魔法使いの嫁; Eng: The Ancient Magus' Bride) is a manga by Kore Yamazaki.
The series started serialization on Monthly Comic Blade, and was later moved to Comic Garden in 2014.
The series is still ongoing and counts 18 volumes (as of October 2022).
It was nominated for the 8th Manga Taisho Award.Having been ostracized by both her relatives and partially by society, orphaned Japanese high school student Chise Hatori decides to sell herself at an auction in order for somebody else to take her in and have a new place to call home. At the auction in London, she is sold for five million pounds to Elias Ainsworth, a seven-foot-tall humanoid with an animal skull for a head. The magus, who seems closer to a demon than human, either brings her the light she desperately seeks or drowns her in ever deeper shadows in her new country, Great Britain.

Enter the Magician’s Apprentice
Her name is Chise Hatori, a penniless orphan troubled by visions. Sold as a slave to an inhuman mage, she is about to begin a strange new life, filled with magic, fairies, and other beings of a fantastical nature.
The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Vol. 1 was a nice start. I liked it, but wasn’t overly wow’d. I do plan to continue the series and see where things go. The thing that got to me was the young girl in the situation she is in. I think a lot of manga take this route.
What we have is a 15-year-old prisoner bride situation. The bone-headed mage bought her, for reasons we haven’t yet figured out. I’m happy that he hasn’t done anything other then give this young girl a safe place to live, grow, and learn about her unique powers. He is at the moment showing her the mage world and teaching her what she can do.
Chise has struggled with depression and attempted suicide in her past and the Fae she comes across may or may not kill her depending on their mood.
The artwork and drawings are beautifully done. The Ancient Magus’ Bride brings us Silkies, Fae, Dragons, and even a Cat Kingdom. There is something magical about this manga until you realize just how dark it can be.

Great power comes at a price…
Chise Hatori’s life has recently undergone shocking change. As a sleigh beggy–a person capable of generating and wielding tremendous magical power–she has transformed from an unwanted child to a magician’s apprentice who has been introduced to fae royalty. But Chise’s newly discovered abilities also mean a cruel fate awaits her.
This second volume continues the storyline from the first.
We see Elias coming through on some of the promises he made about why he bought Chise. Chise shows us that though she started as a slave she is a hard worker and determined to fight her battles in her own way.
We also meet some new characters and more of the world is revealed to us. We learn a little about what Elias is and what it means. We also learn about Chile’s circumstances and that she is blessed that Elias found her.
Overall it was an enjoyable read and the artwork is incredible.

An Ancient Evil
Chise has come face to face with the person responsible for the brutal killings at a nearby churchyard–and to her shock, it’s someone she recognizes from her visions of the tragedy at Ulthar! Appalled by the realization that the alchemist who wrought such horrors is still up to his old tricks, Chise must act to stop him. But in order to control her dangerous powers as a sleigh beggy, she ll need all the help she can get.
In this third installment we see Elias get vulnerable in protecting Chise and she has to reassure him.
It’s got a nice balance of fae, magic, and supernaturals. We get to see slices of regular life moments and it helps us to understand Chise better and experience a little of her life with Elias. She is finally at home in the world, making friends and forming bonds. I liked seeing Chise with Elias. Their moments are awkward in the best ways. He doesn’t understand the feelings that are arising and Chise barely understands too.
I think the best part was learning a little about Elias’s past and seeing all these feelings come to the for front that Elias has no idea what to do.
Overall another enjoyable installment and the artwork is still superb.

I haven’t read a lot of Mangas. This sounds like one I would enjoy. I’ll have to see if my library has this.
I use to read a lot of manga when I was young, but so much now. I like the series and am glad my library carries it.
