Mistletoe Magic by Leah Miles
Nora gripped his hand as they stepped up on the porch, and then one of his sisters pointed out the mistletoe dangling from the expansive porch beam over them. Michael groaned, and she glanced up at him in surprise. He didn’t want to kiss her. She’d thought maybe they’d renewed their attraction from the previous summer, or was it all on her side?
“It looks like you two have found yourselves under the mistletoe.” Uncle Ben sat in a rocker at the top of the stairs where he’d obviously been waiting for a victim.
“Uncle Ben, let’s not do this.” Michael shook his dark head firmly. “This is a set-up.”
Ben stood, looking affronted, with his round cheeks puffed out. “What do you mean? I hung the thing three hours ago, and you are the first couple caught beneath it tonight.”
“The first?” Michael raised his brows.
Nora stared at him, wondering why he looked so exasperated. She wasn’t opposed to kissing him. They had kissed the summer before, but that was a long time ago. “What’s wrong?”
“Are they the first?” Annette and John came up the stairs behind them. “Come on, kids,” she said a little too gleefully, “it’s tradition.”
“Tradition I haven’t told her about,” Michael said, glancing at her with a wry grin.
She shrugged, “I know what mistletoe is for.”
He grasped her hands. “Of course you do, but my family has a theory about that particular item you see hanging up there.”
She tilted her head to look at the bundle of mistletoe. It was seated in a hand-sized silver horn with three large clear crystals dangling underneath. “It’s a beautiful holder.”
He sighed, “It’s been in our family a long time.”
“One hundred and fifty years,” said Uncle Ben. “Our great-great-grandfather crafted it and brought it over when he migrated from Ireland. It’s our own drualus magic.”
Nora still had no clue why it was such a big deal. “Ummm…what is drualus?”
Ben and Annette began speaking at the same time, and both stopped.
“Go ahead, Ben,” Annette said.
He nodded and rubbed his hands together, obviously invested in this story. “Drualus is old Irish for Mistletoe. What you’re looking at up there is a little magic from the old country.” He grinned wide.
Several of Michael’s other family members had joined the little group as if expecting a show. Nora raised a brow, still having no clue what was going on. “Okay. Mistletoe is magic.” She raised one shoulder, “That’s sweet?”
Michael heaved a sigh, and his brown eyes pinned her in place. He seemed to be trying to convey some message to her. An apology?
Annette jumped in to explain. “The legend says that the first couple to kiss under the cupán ársa each Yuletide will be granted the gift of grá fíor, which is Irish for true and undying love.”
