Get To Know Seneca James from A Seneca James Mystery Series
Tell me about the place where you live?
I live in rural Indiana, where I own a butterfly farm and café. Maple Junction is one of those little towns where everyone knows your business, but I love the people there and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
What is a typical day like for you?
I get up early – necessary on a farm. Even if I wanted to sleep in, my cat, Winifred, wouldn’t let me. She follows me around as I spend time in my greenhouse, checking that the butterfly larvae are all doing all right. Then, we head out to the milkweed fields to check on my adult monarchs to make sure they are thriving. And finally, I go to Painted Wings Café, located close to my greenhouse, to check on my cousin, Evie, who runs the café for me.
What is your favorite scent? Why?
Pine trees. My farm is next to Pines Park, so I get to enjoy the scent all year long. It reminds me of my grandmother, since the house I live in used to be hers on the farm.
What is your favorite color? Why?
Orange! Because I can’t imagine a more beautiful color than that of a Monarch Butterfly.
What is your favorite food? Why?
Pizza, no question. I could eat it every day!
What is your favorite beverage? Why?
Diet Cherry Cola. At the Painted Wings Café, our amazing chef, Murray, makes one for me every single day!
What is your favorite music? Why?
Eighties Rock. My grandmother loved it and I spent a lot of time at her house, so I love it too!
What makes you happy?
My family and friends. And, of course, my cat, Winifred. But she’s family too!

Seneca James’ cousin, Evie, ends up in hot water, when she’s accused of stealing a wallet from an angry customer in Seneca’s Painted Wings Café. The customer also happens to be the local bank manager, who Evie pleads with for a much-needed loan, resulting in a public spectacle as the bank manager refuses, and ridicules Evie. When the manager later turns up dead inside the cafe, and Evie is the most likely suspect, it will take all of Seneca’s sleuthing and help from her best friend, Sheriff Cody Bales, to get Evie out of trouble.

Butterfly Betrayal

Ruth J. Hartman spends her days herding cats and her nights spinning mysterious tales. She, her husband, and their cats love to spend time curled up in their recliners watching old Cary Grant movies. Well, the cats sit in the people’s recliners. Not that the cats couldn’t get their own furniture. They just choose to shed on someone else’s.
Ruth, a left-handed, cat-herding, farmhouse-dwelling writer uses her sense of humor as she writes tales of lovable, klutzy women who seem to find trouble without even trying.
Ruth’s husband and best friend, Garry, reads her manuscripts, rolls his eyes at her weird story ideas, and loves her despite her insistence all of her books have at least one cat in them. See updates about her cozy mysteries at Ruthjhartman.com.
