This weeks prompt – Do you believe the education system needs to change its approach to teaching reading and literature to students? (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

WOW! What a question. This one really gets you thinking.

Yes, I do believe the approach to reading should be changed.  I have dyslexia.  It’s not something I’ve talked about or shared.  But, when I was a kid back in the 80’s I had a lot of trouble with English and Reading.  I always read a question on a test wrong or sometimes didn’t finish the test; because it took me longer to read and comprehend.  My parents and teachers didn’t really know what to do and I never really got the help I needed.  It took them around 5th grade to figure out that I had dyslexia.  Even then every dyslexia person learns differently and no one gave me the time I needed to help me develop.  So, school was not fun for me nor was reading.  I never found the joy and love of reading; because I was always struggling.  It wasn’t until my mid-20’s that I discovered that joy and love of reading.  I still struggle, but now we know how to help those with dyslexia and with eReaders you have many options to change fonts, colors, etc…

I wish the educational system could dedicate a more one on one approach.  I feel reading and literature needs to change and adapt.

I’d love to hear from you!

  1. When I taught many years ago, I was allowed some extra after school time with a half dozen of my students to do readalouds and chat about what we just read. I had students with disabilities in the group, but also kids who wanted to do “book club” as we called it. I had written parental permission and the parents would come pick them up. I also used to be allowed to individualize my lesson plans each year to meet each year’s class where they were at- that too got stopped. I can’t imagine trying to teach with all the changes that have come since then.

  2. Bless you. My son is Autistic and and we are looking at ADHD too. He can read ok, but when we try and read his school books with them he refuses and runs off. I like to think that they are having more luck at school, but who knows.

    Have a great weekend.

    1. It’s a struggle when anyone has any type of disability. You need to find what works and that can be a challenge. With schools they don’t have the time to devote to helping those and that is where things need to change. Thanks Emily for visiting and sharing your struggles for this question.

  3. That’s too big of a question to answer succinctly, but I agree that it would be great for teachers and schools to be able to create more one-on-one and individual plans based on a child’s level and learning style.
