I didn’t plan to ask her the hard question first, but when you sit across from a young woman facing the kinds of stakes she is, small talk feels insulting. So I asked it.

“Are you afraid of her?”

Tori was quiet for a long moment, and I thought she might deflect the question, smoothing her face the way she does in the palace so that none of her inner world can be guessed at.

“I’m more afraid of what it means if I’m not,” she said finally.

I waited.

“Not being afraid of her would mean her opinion doesn’t matter, that she’s nothing to me. I can’t bring myself to say that. Not yet.”

“But she would execute you,” I said, “Her own daughter.”

Tori gave a small nod. “I threaten everything she holds dear,” she said, then glanced away. “I understand that.”

Beneath her calm exterior, I thought I saw her composure slip.

“Understanding doesn’t make it hurt less, does it?” I said.

Tori studied her fingernails, then the wall.

“What hurts most?” I asked.

She looked at me, and pain flickered in her eyes. “That being myself means grieving her. That every step I take toward becoming who I really am takes me further away from the mother-daughter relationship I always wanted.”

She straightened herself then, smoothing her expression until no trace of sadness remained, and I marvelled at her quiet strength.

“But I’m done disappearing to make her comfortable,” she said, “even if it costs me everything. Or perhaps especially if it does. Because if that’s the price I have to pay to be myself, then the one charging that fee never was on my side.”

A cool, fluid resistance hit her head, flowed down her spine, and clung to her clothes, as though she were walking through a curtain of water. Sounds muffled, apart from the tinkle of trickling droplets, and the earth felt slick beneath her feet.

A moment later, the sensation ended, and she checked her body, finding it dry. All that remained was a feeling of pleasant freshness. Master Banfay stood a few steps ahead, poking idly at the ground, and at the sight of him, relief flooded her—she was in!

She looked around and gaped—the forest burst with color. It was as though she had been viewing the world until now through a dull, gray-tinted pane, and had finally stepped into the open. The air, too, had a purity she had never imagined possible, and everything felt alive in a way that didn’t seem rational.

Elnora popped into sight, looking pale, and Master Banfay finally looked up from the ground.
