Alexia Maccon, the Lady Woolsey, awakens in the wee hours of the mid-afternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears; leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria.
But Alexia is armed with her trusty parasol, the latest fashions, and an arsenal of biting civility. So even when her investigations take her to Scotland, the backwater of ugly waistcoats, she is prepared: upending werewolf pack dynamics as only the soulless can. She might even find time to track down her wayward husband, if she feels like it.
Changeless is the second book of the Parasol Protectorate series: a comedy of manners set in Victorian London, full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.
Also in this series: Soulless, Blameless

Changeless is book two in the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger and narrated by Emily Gray. This unique blend of paranormal urban fantasy and steampunk culminates in a suspenseful and truly fun mash-up.
The series is best read in order. It’s got a peculiarly cast of characters with ongoing threads and new conflicts that continue in each instalment. Each book does have a conclusion, but more is to come in the next.
Alexia and Conall are settling into married life, working on their communication, and carving out precious alone time. Meanwhile, their careers involve high-stakes secrets: Conall continues his work in supernatural agency policing, and Alexia serves as Queen Victoria’s secret government minister on the Shadow Council.
I enjoyed this installment even more than the first, thanks to my increased familiarity with the urban fantasy-steampunk world and its compelling cast. Alexia remains her wonderfully confident, capable, and delightfully abrasive self—a trait I absolutely adore. Her straightforwardness and relentless desire to learn shone through, especially when she was in action on a new mission alongside some fresh faces. The returning characters, including the flamboyant vampire Lord Akeldama, who brightens every scene, and Alexia’s best friend Ivy, who is simply a hoot, continue to be highlights.
I enjoyed following Alexia on this case as she figures out what is affecting all the British supernatural’s and where her husband disappeared to.
The final scenes are ominous for Alexia on a deeply personal level and I can’t wait to see what comes of that. I dearly hope that the hurt that was caused can be mended and overcome.
Audio: I continue to enjoy this series in audio. Emily Gray is superb in her narration and voice choices for the cast of characters. I just adore the voices and find it adds to the fun historical steampunk feel of the story. I highly recommend the audiobook.
