I thought I was finally getting the hang of being a paranormal policewoman, but when one of the gemstones powering the barrier around the town is stolen, I’m as terrified as the average Joe. Of course, there’s nothing average about the Joes in this town. It’s chock full of mythical creatures, and some of them think the barrier is a waste of time.

Well, I’ve seen the cryptid monster beyond and I know we’re doomed if the magical palisade ever fails. Calling what would follow a massacre would be a gross understatement. The race is on. I need to find the gemstone before the weakened barrier fails forever and the fiend devours us all. No pressure then.

It’s a simple theft… how hard can it be to solve? Answer: Very hard. Especially when theft turns into murder.

There’s also the little outstanding matter of my date with the vampire leader, Connor, not to mention that my best friend seems to be falling apart at the seams. And if all of that isn’t enough to be cracking on with, I have a visitor due imminently. My mother.

I’d rather face the monster.

Dive into this fast-paced urban fantasy series if you love humor, heart, found family and a slow-burn romance.

The Vampire and the Case of the Baleful Banshee is book three in The Portlock Paranormal Detective series by Heather G. Harris and Jilleen Dolbeare and narrated by Alyse Gibbs.

Adventures, mystery, and a fast-paced plot!

While the central mystery was solid—if a bit predictable—the real highlight was the character growth. We finally get the payoff we’ve been waiting for as Bunny and Connor officially take their relationship to the next level!

This installment dives deep into the lore of Portlock, focusing on the stolen cursed items that power the town’s barrier. It’s a high-stakes race to find out who wants the barrier destroyed and why, leaving us with just as many new questions as answers. On a personal level, Bunny faces a major emotional reckoning. Her fear of commitment and “forced love” is put to the test when she finally dates Connor. Learning the true meaning of “the zing” sends her into a mental tailspin—is she actually ready to embrace it?

Audio: I’m still really enjoying this series, especially Alyse Gibbs’s narration. She does a great job of moving the story along and developing the characters.

Another solid entry in The Portlock Paranormal Detective series. Each book delivers a complete mystery while masterfully pushing Bunny’s overarching journey forward. I’m so thrilled we finally got the romance we’ve been waiting for!

About Heather G. Harris

Heather is an urban fantasy writer and mum. She was born and raised near Windsor, which gave her the misguided impression that she was close to royalty in some way. She is not, though she once got a letter from the Queen’s lady-in-waiting.

Heather went to university in Liverpool, where she took up skydiving and met her future husband. When she’s not running around after her children, she’s plotting her next book and daydreaming about vampires, dragons and kick-ass heroines.

Heather loves to travel and once spent a month in Thailand. Thai food remains a firm family favourite. It goes without saying that Heather is a book lover. She grew up reading the likes of Brian Jacques and Anne McCaffrey.

About Jilleen Dolbeare

Jilleen Dolbeare is the author of the Shadow Winged Chronicles, an urban fantasy series about a shape-shifting bush pilot in Alaska.

She loves riding horses, warm ocean beaches, and long walks in the mountains, none of which she can do in the Arctic, so she writes.

Her activities are riding her four-wheeler on cold ocean beaches (often frozen or covered with ice), and long walks to and from work when it’s 40 below—in the dark. She does keep her stakes sharp for those vamps that show up during the 67 days of night.

Jilleen lives with her husband and two hungry cats in Barrow, Alaska where she also discovered her love and admiration of the Inupiaq people and their folklore.
