Have you ever been surprised by a book that you didn’t expect to enjoy?
Yes! I have absolutely been pleasantly surprised by a book I didn’t expect to love. As a mood reader, I tend to pick up books based on an aesthetic or a specific vibe, but every now and then, a story completely catches me off guard and blows my expectations out of the water.
See my list below for a few books that totally satisfied me in the best way possible!
- White Hot [Dramatized Adaptation] by Ilona Andrews
With the GraphicAudio productions for the Hidden Legacy series, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they really grew on me. I still prefer the original solo narration, but I did very much enjoy the Dramatized Adaptation!

- Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors by Annette Marie
Before joining the community read-along for 2026, I hadn’t dipped my toes into the Warped spin-off series within the Guild Codex universe yet. Stepping into a brand-new corner of the world turned out to be an excellent surprise, and I ended up having an blast with it!

- A Royal Witch by Danielle Garrett
It had been a while since I last dipped into the Beechwood Harbor Magic Mystery series by Danielle Garrett. I originally started out reading the physical books, but since audiobooks have been working so great for me lately, I decided to take a gamble and dive into the audio version for book seven, A Royal Witch. I was delightfully surprised by how much I loved it, and I absolutely plan to keep listening!

- Piper by Tasha Black
When I was stuck in a brutal reading slump where picking up any book felt like an absolute chore, I certainly didn’t expect to be blown away. However, I stumbled upon this quick sci-fi romance, and it turned out to be the exact, easy “slump buster” I needed to get my reading momentum back!

Now it’s your turn!

Neat how the books were not only pleasurable, but you got to enjoy reading when you were slumping, too.

Well I try to pick Read-along books that people will enjoy. Glad Warped is going well. Also White Trash Zombies is the bomb!
Thanks for stopping by, Anne! You really do have a knack for picking the best read-along series. I remember when you chose White Trash Zombie a while back—I actually wasn’t in the right headspace for that genre at the time, so I had to pass, but it’s still sitting safely on my TBR! I definitely plan to give it a shot eventually.
Hmm, maybe the current series we are doing for the read-along? I don’t read a ton of urban fantasy, so every time I do find one I like it surprises me. Or else maybe Dungeon Crawler Carl. I heard all the buzz and listened expecting it to be so-so, but now I’m hooked!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing, Lisa! I’ll definitely have to look into Dungeon Crawler Carl—I actually hadn’t heard of that one before, but it sounds like an amazing surprise if it got you hooked!
Oh, I was suprised at how much I enjoyed the White Trash Zombie books. It’s not that I didn’t expect to like them, but they ended up being way better than I expected.
Thanks for visiting and sharing, Jen! I haven’t read the White Trash Zombie series yet, but I know a few other bloggers who had the exact same reaction you did. It sounds like a great surprise!
