First Line Friday {2}: Hooked in One Line!

Happy Friday, bookworms, and welcome to First Line Friday!

The rules are simple: grab the closest book to you (or one from your ever-growing TBR pile), flip to the first page, and share its opening sentence in the comments.

This fun weekly event is hosted by Reading is my Superpower: Link-Up—and a huge shoutout to One Book More where I first spotted it! The goal? Hook your fellow readers using only the book’s very first line before you reveal the title.

Want to play along? It’s incredibly easy:

  • Grab a book: Pick up your current read or a random choice from your shelves.

  • Share the line: Copy the first few sentences in the comments, but keep the title a secret at first to tease us!

  • The Reveal: Finally… let us know what book it is!

It was a testament to my self-control that I didn’t blast the idiot in front of me through the wall.

Murder, magic, and a mouthy witness. Welcome to my case file.

The victim is unrecognisable, pulverised so badly that even magic cannot tell me who they were. As Chester’s only magical Detective Inspector, I handle the cases the Common police cannot touch. This one screams Other Realm from the moment I find a caged bird at the scene, a bird that talks.

My feathered “witness” is foul-mouthed, fond of creative insults, and claims to know exactly who killed our victim. Whether he is telling the truth or just trying to get under my skin, I can’t afford to ignore him.

Then Krieg, the King of Ogres, muscles into the investigation. He is powerful, political, and far too distracting for my liking. With magical factions bristling, a killer still at large, and a witness who never shuts up, I will need to draw on all my training and my rare magical abilities to close this case.

Justice is my duty. Catching the killer is my priority. Surviving the week is optional.

Please note this book was previously published in the Magically Wild anthology.

Immerse yourself in The Other Detective Series – perfect for fans of supernatural crime, complete with a fierce heroine, a rookie partner, gritty murder investigations, and a slow-burn romance.
