As a former con-artist, I love a convoluted, mind-bending scheme as much as the next guy. But as a recently promoted MagiPol agent, I love it significantly less than that guy.
Especially when the life of a kidnapped teen hangs in the balance.
Between confusing orders and conflicting evidence, this whole investigation has me and my partner, Lienna, spinning in circles. Why is our boss keeping this case off the books? Why is our top suspect, the most notorious rogue in Vancouver, mired in contradictions? And why am I the only one who cares more about the victim than their own ulterior motives?
Everyone wants me to shut up and follow orders, but that's not my style. I'll do whatever it takes to save this kid-even if that means returning to my roguish roots.

I’m thrilled to be participating in the 2026 Guild Codex World Read-Along, following the official author reading order! This event is hosted by the wonderful Books of My Heart.
Rogue Ghosts & Other Miscreants is book three in The Guild Codex: Warped series by Annette Marie and Rob Jacobsen, narrated by Iggy Toma.
This is my favorite installment in Kit’s storyline so far. We’re treated to an off-the-books kidnapping case, a visit from the mysterious Ghost, and a crisis of trust between the partners that makes this latest Warped entry a compelling, all-consuming listen. Rob and Annette have truly stepped up their game here.
The timeline places this story concurrently with Guild Codex: Demonized (Hunting Fiends for the Ill-Equipped), even sharing a scene, while running alongside the off-scene events of Guild Codex: Spellbound (Lost Talismans and a Tequila).
It’s a compelling mystery that sends Kit and Lienna on the hunt, forcing them to grapple with hard choices and tough decisions. Kit takes a sensible approach, using his Warp magic to compel cooperation and information. Ultimately, he makes some questionable choices too that leave Lienna questioning his choices, and she makes sure he knows it. His magic is growing and is more powerful than anyone realizes.
While there is a pulse-pounding action-suspense case to be solved, the story also digs deep into character development when Kit is forced to ask himself if he has crossed a moral line in the way he uses his magic, and whether the ends justify the means.
The beloved bad-boy himself, the Ghost, crashes this installment to form an uneasy alliance with Kit and Lienna—much to Lienna’s absolute dismay. As the ruthless Crystal Druid muscles his way in as a formidable side character, lines blur constantly while he pursues a dangerous prize of his own. Meanwhile, the Crow and Hammer’s Guild Master, luminamage, and former assassin Darius King has become a real favorite over the course of the Guild Codex universe. He’s cunning, capable, and more of a “spirit of the law” sort who always shows up to offer just the right hint when a struggling character needs guidance.
Audio: The first-person narration is masterfully handled by Iggy Toma, who perfectly captures Kit’s snarky, nonchalant attitude. Toma brings incredible versatility to the performance, authentically shifting his voice for a diverse cast of characters and delivering a nuanced, emotive reading whenever the plot demands it.
Rogue Ghosts & Other Miscreants was an amazing listen. I highly recommend the audiobook!

About Annette Marie
Annette Marie is the best-selling author of The Guild Codex, an expansive collection of interwoven urban fantasy series ranging from thrilling adventure to hilarious hijinks to heartrending romance. Her other works include YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, its prequel trilogy Spell Weaver, and romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter.
Her first love is fantasy, while fast-paced adventures and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad) with her husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.
About Rob Jacobsen
Rob is a Canadian writer, actor, and director, who has been in a few TV shows you might watch, had a few films in festivals you might have attended, and authored some stories you might have come across. He’s hoping to accomplish plenty more by the time he inevitably dies surrounded by cats while watching reruns of Mr. Robot. Currently, he is the Creative Director of Cave Puppet Films, as well as the co-author of the upcoming Guild Codex: Warped book series with Annette Marie.
