My name is Larkspur, and I am an Elemental.

My people use the power of the earth to sustain life and defy our enemies. I should be at my father's side as a royal princess. But as a half-breed, bastard child, that isn't going to happen.

I've been accused of attacking the queen, my wicked stepmother, and my life is suddenly on the line. I have only two options left to me: banishment, or training to become one of the King's Elite Guards, an Ender.

Option one will kill me.

Option two is meant to break me, but it's the only way to survive.

Did I mention I have no power like the rest of the elementals, and my connection to the earth is worth next to nothing?

Could things get any worse? Of course they can.

Welcome to being an Elemental.

Recurve is book one in The Elemental series by Shannon Mayer.

I read Mayer’s Rylee Adamson series first and enjoyed the world and action-packed adventure, so I decided to pick up The Elemental series. I learned that it unfolds thirty some years prior to PRICELESS and features Larkspur who we meet in, Elementally Priceless and other novellas, when she is no longer with her race.

We meet Lark and learn about her. She’s a princess with no elemental powers, so she’s not allowed to live with her father the King. To the Elementals she is useless and this makes her suffer. We are treated to flashbacks which are vital in setting the tone and establishing the Big Bad. The Enders’ training played an important role in expediting Lark’s evolution from Seeder to Princess.

We also meet some secondary characters.

Recurve is a nice introduction to the Elemental world. I’m looking forward to reading on in The Elemental series.
