***Spin off of the Crescent City Fae series***
From New York Times bestselling author, Deanna Chase, comes the first book in the Last Witch Standing series featuring the badass witch, Phoebe Kilsen.

Trouble is brewing in New Orleans. Shifters are moving in and vampires are being picked off in record numbers. And vampire hunter Phoebe Kilsen is right in the middle of the war.

When Phoebe’s best friend goes missing along with the consort of the most powerful vampire in New Orleans, Phoebe betrays her heart and her shifter partner by teaming up with the one vampire she’s never trusted. They say all is fair in love and war, but Phoebe is putting it all on the line and she’s not at all sure she’ll make it out alive.

Also in this series: Bewitched By Moonlight

Soulless at Sunset is book one in the Last Witch Standing series by Deanna Chase. It’s a paranormal investigation storyline with a side of romance.

In Soulless at Sunset we are treated to a kick-ass witch who teams up with a shifter. Phoebe and Dax work together to keep the peace among the paranormal residents in New Orleans.

I found Phoebe to be an interesting character. I like her skills, her knowledge, her witch abilities, and her determination to find and help her friends. I also liked the interactions between the characters.

Soulless at Sunset is an action-packed fast-paced story that spans 48 hours in Phoebe’s life as she races to save her best friend, Willow.

I picked this up as a freebie. The cover grabbed me and so, I thought I’d give this series a try. I didn’t read the blurb on goodreads; before starting this book and so, I didn’t know this was a spin-off of the authors Crescent City Fae series. The relationships and connections are set up in the Crescent City Fae series by the time we get to Soulless at Sunset. Their’s also a prequel, Bewitched By Moonlight, to Soulless at Sunset and its not necessary to read that prequel before this novel.

I’d have had a better time, not felt out of loop and liked this more, if I’d had read the previous series first. I feel you need to read Crescent City Fae series; before starting the Last Witch Standing series.

Rated: 3 Stars

About Deanna Chase

Deanna is a native Californian. After spending five years traveling in an RV, she and her husband moved into an adorable cottage in a small town outside of New Orleans. After about six months, Deanna was convinced their 1907 home was haunted. Late at night as she penned Haunted on Bourbon Street, she often heard footsteps throughout the old house. Luckily, the spirit appears to be harmless, as he/she has never done more than make a little noise and possibly smoke a few cigars. However, if the ghost ever shows up in a dream, you’ll be the first to hear of it. Smudge stick anyone?

When she isn’t writing, she is often goofing off with her husband in New Orleans and playing with her two shih tzu dogs.

  1. I agree with you. It’s hard to decided if you should continue reading the book or stop and go back or just stop all together. Sometimes authors are good about tell you if it’s a spin-off, other times not so much. I always try to let readers know if it’s part of a world/spin-off and how to read the books. This time around I fell that you need to read the other series first. I might go back now that I have KU and know that both series are available that way. Well thank’s for visiting!

  2. I hate it when I get reading a book and realize it is a spin-off of a series! You always get left with the question of whether you should go back and read the previous series before continuing or just hope you get enough info to understand the characters and world.

  3. I have some freebies by this author also but have yet to read them. I did purchase the first in another series of hers because it was only 99¢ and the narrator was Gabra Zackman who I love. Great job with reading your freebies!

    1. I’ve been trying to read more of the freebies I picked up. I’ve picked a few of her 1st in a series books, so I got to try some of her other series, but not Crescent City Fae, but now that I have KU I think I try it out. Thank’s for visiting!

  4. It was enjoyable, but I felt reading the other series would have made this one more enjoyable. Now that I have KU again. I’m going to check out the Crescent City Fae series and then go from their. Thank’s for visiting!

  5. thanks so much for mentioning it would be better to read the other series first. still sounds like a good one, so i’ll be checking that out
