Step into the Nook for August’s magic, mayhem, and multi-tasking! Grab your favorite cozy drink and let’s dive into this month’s highlights.

The first week of August was pretty quiet—just our final stretch of summer before high school kicked off! We spent the week chilling at home and taking daily walks together.

The following week brought freshman orientation on Tuesday. The kids picked up their class schedules, checked out their classrooms, learned the ropes, grabbed their Chromebooks and new cell phone pouches (thanks to California’s new law!), and snapped their yearbook/ID photos. Wednesday was official day one—teachers were outside welcoming everyone back, and just like that, high school began!

With my kid joining Cross Country, his days now run from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM between school and practice. It’s definitely a shift! While I appreciate having a routine back, I’m still figuring out my own flow—especially since I haven’t had the focus for reading lately. Instead, I’ve been unwinding with Valheim and Baldur’s Gate 3 on Steam.

Unfortunately, week two kicked off with a hitch: my phone alarm mysteriously switched to vibrate-only, causing me to oversleep on both Monday and Tuesday. I’ve fiddled with the settings and rebooted the phone, so hopefully, that drama is behind me! (It is.)

Between school and sports, the week was full. Tuesday night was the mandatory parent meeting for fall sports (a total learning curve for a first-time Cross Country mom!), and the rest of the week went to signing class syllabi. I was pleasantly surprised to catch my son actually reading through each one!

As for my day-to-day, I’m up at 7:00 AM, drop him off at 8:05 AM, and then either run quick errands, walk Panda, or head straight home. Mornings are for blogging, emails, and light audiobook listening, followed by a simple lunch.

Afternoons are for gaming! Valheim has been my go-to since I can take my time exploring, which is a nice change from playing with my husband and son (who love to rush through everything). Once my son texts for a pickup between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM, we head home to wrap up the evening with dinner and homework. Saturday Aug. 22nd. brought our first AYSO Soccer Game and first time meeting all the kids on the team.

The last week of August kicked off AYSO soccer practice on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, making for even longer days. By the time he’s finished, he’s so exhausted he’s in bed by 10:00 PM. Fortunately, there haven’t been any issues with completing homework or studying yet—he seems to be managing his schedule well. I’m really glad to see him taking charge and prioritizing. To round out the month, Saturday, August 29th brought our very first Cross Country match!

  1. Definitely a busy month! So they get a cell phone pouch? How does that work? At our schools so far they just make them keep it put away. I think in middle school where I am now they have to leave it in their lockers during the day. Hope September is going well so far for you!

    1. It’s called the “Bell-to-Bell” Rule. Phones must be turned off or set to “Do Not Disturb” mode and locked away in a school-provided pouch called the QuietCase, which students carry with them. Once the phone goes in, you zip and lock it—eliminating distractions until it’s unlocked at the end of the day with a QuietKey. The goal is to encourage face-to-face communication and ensure parents contact the school directly during an emergency rather than texting students. We’ll see how it goes, but I like the idea! It forces kids to pay attention and actually talk to each other instead of scrolling.

  3. What an exciting time for you and your family! I remember those long days and driving them around. I hope you enjoy every moment! My August saw my son adulting by starting his job – his career and moving from home. I also moved my daughter back to college. It’s too quiet around my house now!

    I haven’t done my blog Ahead I usually do in August but I am finally getting caught up so more 2027 planning in September.
